Interface was the first North American carpet manufacturer to publish a third party verified Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) and we’ve since expanded our EPDs into seven product categories. Now, 99% of Interface products globally have an EPD.
What is an EPD?
An EPD provides the product ingredients and environmental impacts that happen during the entire life of a product. It’s similar to the ingredient and nutrition labels on food. Instead of calories and recommended daily allowances, an EPD shows things like raw material extraction, energy use, air, soil and water emissions and water use and waste generation.
Why create an EPD?
Creating an EPD requires the increased transparency that people are requesting and we are committed to being open about our products’ environmental impact. Not just a green claim or promise, an EPD shares product information in a consistent way, certified to a public standard and verified by a credible third party.
For customers seeking LEED certification, our product specific EPDs contribute to the LEED v4 Building Product Disclosure and Optimization credit that reward product transparency and environmental impact reduction.
How are EPDs created?
Companies must commit to fully disclose what is usually confidential information about how products are made. In addition, companies must perform a comprehensive life cycle assessment according to ISO 14040 standards. From this information, an Environmental Product Declaration is developed based on ISO 14025 standards. Both the EPD and the LCA have to be third party verified.
The full name of HPD certification is "Healthy Products Declaration" and it's collaborative is a not-for-profit, share a common purpose to improve the transparency of information and the material health of the built environment. is the health and safety of building materials and products to the public to make a statement of health certification.
Applicants for HPD certification must declare that the product contains all known toxic or hazardous substances, healthy products life concern product environmental and social benefits, focus on energy sustainability, but also help to improve the health of the built environment.
The HPD Open Standard specification is harmonized with programs of International Living Future Institute, Cradle-to-Cradle Product Innovation Institute, Clean Production Action, BIFMA, LEED, WELL and a growing number of rating and certification standards in the building industry.
The Carpet and Rug Institute Green Label Plus programme sets a high standard for indoor air quality by certifying products with very low levels of volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions. As a prerequisite for initial certification, carpets must undergo a 14-day testing process as directed by California's Section 01350 Standard Practice for VOC Testing. View our certificates here.
Products awarded the GREENGUARD Gold Certification by UL Environment are subject to advanced dynamic environmental chamber testing, along with exposure modelling and analytical measurements, to ensure they do not contain more than stipulated levels of VOCs, formaldehyde, ozone and phthalates. The certification tests for suitability of the use of these products by sensitive individuals such as children and the elderly. Our tiles backed with GlasBac® and GlasBac®RE are GREENGUARD Gold certified. View our GREENGUARD certificates here.
